A community-led sanctuary project located at Rotokare Scenic Reserve in Eastern Taranaki. Rotokare Sanctuary is home to many rare and endangered native species including pateke, hihi, tieke, kiwi, popokatea, toutouwai, matata, titipounamu. A pest-proof fence surrounds the 230ha reserve, natural17.8ha lake & wetland. The Sanctuary is free to enter and open 24/7. Entry is through a set of double gates. responsible freedom camping is welcomed. No pets are permitted in the reserve and vehicles must be checked for pests prior to entry. There is a 4.2km walkway around the lake edge. The first 600m is an easy grade and wheelchair accessible. The ridgeline gives spectacular views of Taranaki and mountains in the centre of the North Island.
